Out and about in a cold February

Some interesting birding in Derbyshire in February, although with some indifferent weather to boot.

Opposite the terrific cafe in Willington, outside the railway station, was a small flock of Redwing and Fieldfare, feeding on berries on the Cotoneaster bushes. They were a bit skittish as expected, but some patience paid off with a few decent shots.

Over at Twyford,  there were 5 Whooper Swans in a field on the Swarkestone road. Also present the next day were 7 Bewick's Swans, 2 adults and 5 juveniles, a remarkable family unit.

Over at nearby Locko Park, just north of Spondon, Derby, a beautiful drake Smew spent a week or more on it's small lake.

There were some Waxwings still about, although sporadic sightings. This small group were on the side of the A6 in Alvaston.
