A trip to the north-west would not be complete without calling in at the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust reserve at Martin Mere. apart from the hundreds of Winter Swans this time of year, there are also large flocks of Ruff. This one came very close to the hide.
Whooper Swans winter here and were in large numbers, although there cousins, the Berwick’s are not wintering in as many numbers as previous years see Bewick’s in decline? ).
There’s always plenty to see at Martin Mere. There are the wild birds from the numerous hides, or if you fancy brushing up on your camera skills, there are plenty of captive birds to view close-up.
